IFRTD Executive Committee appoints new Chairman
2006-05-10

During the Executive Committee Meeting in Stockholm in November 2005 it was decided that IFRTD should elect a new Chairperson in light of a north-south balance between the Executive Secretary and the Chairman. IFRTD would like to thank our Interim Chair, Paul Starkey for his commitment and assistance to IFRTD. IFRTD also  thanks him for his role as a strong IFRTD promoter and we are sure we will continue to depend on him as a loyal member to share knowledge and promote networking

The EC also agreed that the next Chairman would come from Asia. It is with great pleasure that we introduce Dr. Danang Parikesit, an active member from the Indonesia National Forum Group. Below follows a short introduction from Danang.

My first interaction with the IFRTD was in 1998 when I attended a rural transport workshop training in London. As a workshop participant, I was invited to participate in the IFRTD strategic policy meeting. Since then I have become an active member of the IFRTD network and during the period of 2001 – 2005 I was the coordinator of the Indonesian Forum Group for Rural Transport and Development, an institutional member of the IFRTD. I strongly believe that advocating rural transport and rural development issues can be best undertaken by strengthening a civil society network and establishing policy dialogues among relevant stakeholders.

By chairing the IFRTD, I hope we – as a network, could enhance our capacity in a policy advocacy and dialogue processes. I hope the Forum could continue and progressively pursue a global effort in mobilizing knowledge and experiences to develop sustainable development. The Forum could assist decision makers to determine rural transport policies and investments – to empower the rural poor and disadvantages as well as to serve larger development objectives.
