Between the 5th and 7th November 2007, The Sub Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) held its annual meeting in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso, hosted by the Government of Burkina Faso.

A total of 247 people participated in the meeting including 170 delegates from 35 Sub-Saharan African countries; Six African institutions and economic bodies and three associations of  regional bodies; and officials from the African Development Bank, European Commission, Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), UK Department for International Development (DfID), Agence Francaise de Développement (AFD), GTZ, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), USAID, the Islamic Development Bank and the World Bank;

The meeting marked the end of the SSATP’s first Long Term Development Plan (LTDP) and was used to launch and plan the implementation of the second Development Plan or DP2, due to run between 2008 and 2011.

The overall goal of DP2, and the main theme of the meeting, is “Fostering sound policies and strategies, contributing to Africa’s integration, economic growth and poverty reduction”.  On day one of the meeting, participants were given the opportunity to explore in detail the three central aims of DP2:

  • Promotion of pro-poor growth strategies in the transport sector
  • Sustainable institutional and financial arrangements for road infrastructure and rural and urban transport
  • Transport along selected corridors

Following this, findings and recommended actions for 2008 were identified and adopted for each of the three themes.

Another main output of the meeting was the signing of a ministerial declaration on the removal of barriers along Africa’s transit corridors, the Ougadougou Declaration.
