West and Central Africa 2006 IFRTD regional meeting
2006-11-02

Between 24th and 26th October 2006 active IFRTD members and affiliated national forum groups (NFGs) from Burkina Faso, DRC, Cameroon, Niger, Senegal, and Rwanda, came together in Douala, Cameroon for the annual regional network governance meeting.

The meeting was hosted by the emerging NFG in Cameroon and organised in collaboration with the new regional IFRTD Coordinator for West and Central Africa - Guy Kemtsop. The Rwanda NFG, as a member of both the West and Central Africa and East and Southern Africa regional IFRTD networks, was invited to send a representative to share experiences between the regions and to explain how the Rwanda NFG have focused on building network capacity.

This 2006 meeting was devoted to brainstorming strategies for strengthening networking in francaphone Africa at both regional and national level. Participants expressed an interest in revitalising the French rural transport discussion list-serv, and the need to work on several common themes in the region such as gender and transport, transport and vulnerable groups and rural transport safety. In addition the region will be developing a strong communications plan aimed at developing specific strategies for different traget audiences.

One day was set aside to discuss IFRTD's next 5 year strategy. This was the last in a series of 4 regional workshops that have formed a key component of the network's participative strategy development process. It was a chance for members in the region to contribute to and influence the draft global strategy before it is taken to the IFRTD Executive Committee in November.
